The past two weeks has been a crazy whirl. Our family visiting from France, their annual two week trip. An exhausting schedule for them, trying to catch up with UK friends whilst still spending some quality time with family, of course spread over several locations. We did manage a two night/three day visit to Southwold. The weather wasn’t great but we did get in a walk and a morning on the beach.
An evening at Ely Cathedral for a Rick Stein book launch.
Grandsons were happy to lounge around the house playing on their phones or switch and eating copious amounts of UK sweets, though we did get them out for one 6.5 mile walk, much to the younger ones consternation!
Our tiny house felt the strain, when we downsized back in 2017 the children were much smaller, now they just overfill each room. I mean how do they go from little boys to nearly men?
What’s on my needles?
I’m still trying to decide on a pattern for the yarn I shared on my previous Looking Back post. I’m now thinking a sweater vest rather than a sweater, as I’ll get more wear out of it.
A third pair of socks are underway. I’m using up some minis, in fact I’ve actually added another to the mix since I took this picture. I’m alternating the three shades and the results are pleasing. There will be grey heels and toes. I plan on knitting the second sock after the first heel as I want to make sure I have enough yarn to get the leg done. I can then assess how much yarn I have for both feet. I may have to get creative.
What am I listening to?
Currently I have two books which I’m listening to? Rekindled by Tamera Alexander and Oh Miriam by Miriam Margoyles. As usual Miriam is her frank and open self. I cringe at points but she is hilarious. I’m sure listening to Miriam read is definitely better than reading book yourself.
Rekindled is set on a cattle ranch in the rockies during the 1860’s a story of love and lives changed by the times, historical fiction. I’m very much enjoying it. First book in the Fountain Creek Chronicles. It also happens to be a free read on Audible.
Getting our hands dirty
The weather has really been rubbish for working on the allotment, though we have managed a couple of morning to get some clearing and planting done. We are fortunate that the soil is quite free draining and sandy (stony) so at least we aren’t battling clay.
We’ve managed to plant three varieties of over wintering onions, garlic and 8 rows of broad bean seed. Pulled lots of carrots that I need to prep for the freezer. We are still awaiting a compost delivery to site but the ground is too wet for the truck now, so we may end having to leave the new plot for a while longer. Still it’s covered so hopefully the weeds have been dying off 🤞
In the kitchen
There is promise of quinces from the school tree this weekend. I’m thinking jams, chutney and pies. I’m also working my way through the line up of squash in the kitchen, there have been pumpkin and orange muffins and Thai pumpkin noodle soup, both very good, sorry no pictures.
That’s about it for today, we are due to take the younger grandchildren to the fireworks tonight, it’s currently raining, again. Their parents are helping out at the event as marshalls, I’m thinking wellies and raincoats will be the order of the day, forecast says no rain from 2pm but I won’t hold my breath
Enjoy your weekend, until the next time Sue
